Briefly forget about the price of this product and I will come back to this later. This two volume print edition bundled with an electronic version is a huge neurology blockbuster that I am sure will satisfy the needs of most neurologist, most of the time. It is aimed at practising neurologists though general physicians (are there any left?) and GPs may find some of the content useful and interesting but may prove too detailed for their clinical needs. However, there is plenty to satisfy their intellectual curiosity. This is a definite one stop shop for clinical neurology and in just over 2000 pages seems to be pretty comprehensive in its coverage. After all, the title says this is for clinical practice and I agree with that conclusion.
The print version comes in 2 volumes with volume 1 slimmer than volume 2, but both volumes are well built and have tough covers. The production values ooze quality with skilful use of colour and the text is broken up into easy to read segments. There are also plenty of tables and diagrams and like all good books, it is easy to dip into and read the relevant sections. It can be used as a reference book and certainly the depth of detail is impressive with the accent on clinical practice. It can also be used to simply read around a topic. The text is readable and understandable which is probably the most important aspect; after all, if it cannot relate to its audience then it has failed. However, in this case, the book is a resounding success, as it is an easily readable and seemingly comprehensive review of the discipline. I can only sit and wonder about the huge effort put in to make this book what it is. Apart from building on older editions, the labour that has gone into this current edition is truly impressive and I guess that is reflected in the price-see more at the end.
This impressive offering comes with ExpertConsult access which means that in addition to the print version, owners are permitted access to an online version via the ExpertConsult website. This is easy to use and get around and there is additional bonus content available from here, such as online video and updates to the book. Although the book is supposed to be bundled with an app for smartphones, at the time of writing this review it was not available for my iPhone.
This is an extremely impressive offering and I suspect if neurology makes up a large part of your clinical practice then you will enjoy owning this and I would hope refer to it regularly. I agree the purchase cost is a lot of money but spread over a period of time and assuming regular use for the right person, then it may well be a wise investment.
