This is an American book designed to help people pass an American exam and is associated with the Miller review course http://millerreview.com/ However as a standalone textbook, it is very good and will be appreciated by a global audience. It is a chunky paperback that comes in at just under 900 pages and it is full of wisdom and is a great reference source.
It is squarely aimed at a practicing orthopaedic surgeon and I would guess an established orthopaedic surgeon as well. However as a GP, I found it an excellent reference source and perfectly understandable. Impressively from a GP perspective most of the content I found either relevant or interesting. The book has a lot going for it. There is an impressive array of images, anatomical diagrams and radiographs as well as tables and I would go as far as saying, there is a generous serving up of these illustrations. This hugely amplifies the text and makes reading the book far more interesting, easier and educational. The quality of these images is simply superb and lights up the book and brings the subject matter to life.
The text is written in note style which is broken up into small segments with a generous use of bullet points. This means that the key points are easily visible and the information is presented in an easy to read, fact packed style. I found it this layout attractive, useful and very informative and is a key feature of the book. I used the book both as a reference source and simply to dip into and read around a topic. I found that I did the latter a lot and found it an educational and enjoyable experience.
As an added bonus, being part of the publisher’s excellent ExpertConsult.com digital offering, there is a web and app based version of the book, bundled with the price. Both are easy to use and enhance the effectiveness of the offering. Best of all is the price of the book which I think is keenly priced and offers very good value for money.
I think this book is best aimed at orthopaedic surgeons but GPs and those with a strong interest in musculoskeletal medicine will not be disappointed. The production values and large amount of content makes this a very substantial offering at a keen price. An impressive offering that deserves a wide audience.
