The title says it is about the principles and practice of infectious disease, which is a modest understatement. I knew roughly what I was going to expect when I installed the software as I have used this programme before (a previous version) and the last time I was pleasantly impressed. However this new edition is even better, more accurate and faster as well as being very easy to install. For those of you not conversant with this type of software, effectively you speak into a microphone and your computer types what you say; it’s that simple.

My lasting impression of this book was the very same as the first time I opened these two lavish volumes and that was – wow! This two volume set is a spectacular and seemingly comprehensive review of rheumatology. Now in its sixth edition, it is a huge production with a large number of contributors from numerous countries all over the world. It is expertly edited and seamlessly put together. There is plenty of good basic and interesting yet relevant science here as well as a seemingly comprehensive review of the clinical aspects of rheumatology. I would suspect this is the nearest you would get to an encyclopaedia of rheumatology.

If you know nothing about this book then don’t be misled by the title – this book is certainly not short, it is probably the very opposite. It is an in-depth, yet readable review of general surgery and is an ideal reference source for students, GPs, junior doctors and even established surgeons will appreciate an update, especially when a problem does not lie centrally within their regular field. I have used this book before which is not really that surprising as it is now in 26th edition and was first published in 1932. Even though I have used previous editions, I only became well acquainted with it, well after its first publication date!
