I am now a retired GP but as an undergraduate in the early 1980s, I used this is as my main clinical medicine textbook and it was superb then. Now in it’s 70th anniversary edition (that’s right, first published in 1952) it remains a superb textbook. It is a pleasure to read and use and I am sure if he was here today, Sir Stanley Davidson (1894-1981) the originator of this textbook would be proud on how it has evolved.
When I used this book as an undergraduate, I enjoyed (yes!) the clarity of it’s use of English and that has been preserved to this very day. Not surprisingly being a general medical textbook it is of a substantial size, running to 1357 pages and has a very good coverage of what is a huge subject. There is good use of colour, the text is well broken up and illustrated with plenty of well-designed figures and tables. It makes a good read, educational, instructive and informative and makes an excellent reference book.
It covers common and not so common conditions and will appeal to a wide readership which will include undergraduate clinical students, GPs and specialists wanting an up todate medical textbook. Nurse specialists will also find this book useful as well and I am sure a new purchase will be well thumbed by its regular use. It is easy to dip in and checkout the required information. Take for example the excellent section on diabetes from Page 727 is excellent and the figure on Page 734 is excellent. I would hope time spent reading this section will improve diabetic care and I don’t think it will take a long time to read it. This is a small example of the excellence of this book.
Throughout the book, there is impressive coverage and detail and very rarely it did not give me the answers I was looking for. It also comes with a full eBook included in the price of the book but the code in the inside cover did not work. It turns out that the publisher has changed the website and new access codes are needed. Technical support provided an easy solution with replacement codes. The eBook is excellent to use on the website and the app will be ready soon. Best of all is the price. I think the price which includes the eBook is exceptional value for money for the quality and volume. An outstanding and modern textbook of clinical medicine which will have wide global appeal.
