I have always been interested in medical books since I was an undergraduate and I am always on the lookout for something new and interesting. I have not always found it easy to find a good general all purpose ENT book but I think I have now found a good candidate. Despite the fact that it is now in its 11th edition, I had not come across it before and was delighted to meet up with it.
The first thing that caught my attention was the title, it is about diseases of the nose, throat and ear and not the more traditional expression, ear nose and throat. I don’t know the answer to this so I next went to the foreword of the book. Sadly, the first author of the first incarnation of this book died in World War 1 but the book was resurrected in 1919 by Dr Arthur Logan Turner. Now in an impressive 11th edition, this is a modern and seemingly thorough review of ENT well equipped for the 21st century.
Though it has an impressive pedigree, it is the here and now that is the critical part and this book certainly passes with flying colours. It is a modern, well illustrated textbook with plenty of illustrations and figures and the text is clear, well written and broken up into easy to read sections. It is also a suitable textbook both for primary and secondary care doctors and has a good depth of coverage. Certainly for primary care, I would suspect this book would satisfy virtually all a user’s ENT needs. A plus point for many is that most of the contributors are from the UK and hence represents clinical practice from a British perspective.
It is an impressive offering as it is contains an easy to read and informative text which seems to cover most ENT topics that most users will need. At over 700 pages, there is plenty of material but best of all it represents very good value for money. If you want to learn more about ENT and want an established, yet up to date book which is not expensive then look no further. It is an excellent general all purpose ENT textbook which will satisfy a wide audience. It deserves to reach a wide audience.
