We propose that this alternative INS product may play a role in islet autoimmunity and pathology, as well as endocrine or paracrine function or islet development and endocrine destiny, and transdifferentiation between endocrine cells (Diabetologia)

Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Youth Shows Greater Autoimmunity than Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults: Evidence from a Nationwide, Multicenter, Cross-sectional Study
A high prevalence of LADY exists in youth with T2D phenotype. Latent autoimmune diabetes forms a continuous age-related spectrum from LADY to LADA, in which LADY shows greater autoimmunity (Pediatric Diabetes)
Risk of beta-cell autoimmunity presence for progression to type 1 diabetes: A systematic review and meta-analysis
This study established the association between the seroconversion of islet autoantibodies and T1DM progression in nondiabetic people with or without definite genetic susceptibility, providing further evidence for an extensive application in routine clinical practice to identify individuals at risk of T1DM (Journal of Autoimmunity)
Presence of diabetes-specific autoimmunity in women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) predicts impaired glucose regulation at follow-up
We observed a low prevalence (5.6%) of diabetes-related autoimmunity in our GDM cohort, consistent with the prevalence reported in previous studies. It was not possible to uncover features predictive of autoimmune GDM. However, given the significant risk of a persistent impaired glycemic regulation at follow-up, it is advisable to control for glucose tolerance in GDM women with diabetes-related autoimmunity (Journal of Endocrinological Investigation)
The course of diabetes in children, adolescents and young adults: does the autoimmunity status matter?
Antibodies-negative pediatric and young adult patients with type 1 diabetes in this study had higher incidence of family history of diabetes, higher frequency of retinopathy, less frequent ketosis at presentation, but similar age at onset, HbA1c, incidence of nephropathy and neuropathy compared to antibodies-positive patients (BMC Endocrine Disorders)
Beta cell function and ongoing autoimmunity in long-standing, childhood onset type 1 diabetes
There is evidence of ongoing autoimmunity in the majority of individuals with longstanding diabetes. Endogenous insulin secretion continues for many years after diagnosis in individuals diagnosed with autoimmune-mediated type 1 diabetes above age 5. These findings suggest that some beta cells are protected from continued autoimmune attack in longstanding type 1 diabetes (Diabetologia)
