Regarding prevention, as it remains unclear whether the administration of drugs with neuroprotective effects (DPP-4i, GLP-1 receptor agonists etc.) would reduce the incidence and progression of small vessel disease or the progression of brain atrophy, it will be necessary to explore the respective associations in prospective research (Journal of Diabetes Investigation)

Comparative effect of metformin versus sulfonylureas with dementia and Parkinson’s disease risk in US patients over 50 with type 2 diabetes mellitus
Metformin users compared with sulfonylurea users were associated with a lower risk of all-cause dementia, AD and VD but not with PD or MCI. Age and renal function modified risk reduction. Our findings support the hypothesis that metformin provides more neuroprotection for dementia than sulfonylureas but not for PD, but further work is required to assess causality (BMJ)
Glycemic Control, Diabetic Complications, and Risk of Dementia in Patients With Diabetes: Results From a Large U.K. Cohort Study
Higher or unstable HbA1c levels and the presence of diabetic complications in patients with type 2 diabetes are associated with increased dementia risk. Effective management of glycemia might have a significant role in maintaining cognitive health among older adults with diabetes (Diabetes Care)
Hypoglycemia in Type 2 Diabetes exacerbates Amyloid‐related proteins associated with dementia
The AD‐associated protein pattern found in T2D, with basal elevated APP and reduced SNCA, was exaggerated by hypoglycemia with increased APP and decreased SNCA (Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism)
Oral diabetes medication and risk of dementia in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes
Overall, the use of oral diabetes medication in type 2 diabetes patients significantly decreased the risk of dementia (Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice)
Effect of the treatment of Type 2 diabetes mellitus on the development of cognitive impairment and dementia
From the evidence available, there is no reason to favour any particular type of diabetic treatment in order to prevent cognitive impairment in people with Type 2 diabetes (Cochrane)
Effects of Pioglitazone on the Incidence of Dementia in Patients with Diabetes
Pioglitazone is a time- and dose-dependent protective factor against dementia in patients with diabetes. The risk of dementia is lower in long-term and high-dose pioglitazone users than in never users of pioglitazone (Journal of Diabetes and Its Complications)
Type 2 Diabetes as a Risk Factor for Dementia in Women Compared With Men: A Pooled Analysis of 2.3 Million People Comprising More Than 100,000 Cases of Dementia
Individuals with type 2 diabetes are at ∼60% greater risk for the development of dementia compared with those without diabetes. For vascular dementia, but not for nonvascular dementia, the additional risk is greater in women (Diabetes Care)
