Excess Mortality among Persons with Type 2 Diabetes

October 29th 2015

Mortality among persons with type 2 diabetes, as compared with that in the general population, varied greatly, from substantial excess risks in large patient groups to lower risks of death depending on age, glycemic control, and renal complications (NEJM)

Liraglutide in people treated for type 2 diabetes with multiple daily insulin injections: randomised clinical trial (MDI Liraglutide trial)

October 29th 2015

Adding liraglutide to multiple daily insulin injections in people with type 2 diabetes improves glycaemic control without an increased risk of hypoglycaemia, reduces body weight, and enables patients to lower their insulin doses (BMJ)

Telemedicine compared with standard care in type 2 diabetes mellitus: A randomized trial in an outpatient clinic

October 28th 2015

In the direct comparison of home video consultations vs standard outpatient treatment in type 2 diabetes mellitus, telemedicine was a safe and available option with favourable outcomes after six months treatment (Journal of Telemedicine and Telecare)

National Variations in Comorbidities, Glycosylated Hemoglobin Reduction, and Insulin Dosage in Asian Patients with Type 2 Diabetes: The FINE-Asia Registry

October 26th 2015

Countries with >9 years of diabetes prior to insulin initiation had the lowest reductions in HbA1c and proportions of patients achieving HbA1c and FBG targets, suggesting that earlier basal insulin initiation may afford better glycemic control in these patients (Diabetes Therapy)

Clinically significant chronic liver disease in people with type 2 diabetes: the Edinburgh Type 2 Diabetes Study

October 23rd 2015

Our study investigations increased the known prevalence of clinically significant chronic liver disease by over 150%, confirming the suspicion of a large burden of undiagnosed disease. The disease incidence rate was lower than anticipated, but still much higher than the general population rate (QJM)

Type 2 diabetes in migrant south Asians: mechanisms, mitigation, and management

October 20th 2015

South Asians, particularly when living in high-income countries, are at a substantially elevated risk of type 2 diabetes compared with white Europeans, and typically develop the disease 5–10 years earlier and at a lower BMI  (The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology)

Reduction of serum concentration of FABP4 by sitagliptin in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

October 19th 2015

Sitagliptin decreases serum FABP4 level, at least in part, via reduction in the expression and consecutive secretion of FABP4 in adipocytes by direct inhibition of DPP-4

HbA1c and all-cause mortality risk among patients with type 2 diabetes

October 19th 2015

Our study demonstrated a J-shaped association between HbA1c and the risk of all-cause mortality among men and women with type 2 diabetes. Both high and low levels of HbA1c were associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality

Depressive Symptoms in Youth With Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes

October 14th 2015

Depressive symptoms are more frequent than diagnosed depression in youth with T1D or T2D. These results underscore the need for regular depression screening and appropriate referral for youth with diabetes (Diabetes Care)

Type 2 diabetes exaggerates exercise effort and impairs exercise performance in older women

October 14th 2015

Taken together, physiological measures of exercise effort were greater in older women with T2DM than controls. Exercise effort is a modifiable and thereby targetable end point. In order to facilitate regular exercise, methods to reduce exercise effort in T2DM should be sought (BMJ)

Effects of Initiating Moderate Alcohol Intake on Cardiometabolic Risk in Adults With Type 2 Diabetes

October 13th 2015

This long-term RCT suggests that initiating moderate wine intake, especially red wine, among well-controlled diabetics as part of a healthy diet is apparently safe and modestly decreases cardiometabolic risk. The genetic interactions suggest that ethanol plays an important role in glucose metabolism, and red wine’s effects also involve nonalcoholic constituents (Annals of Internal Medicine)

Effects on Clinical Outcomes of Adding Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4 Inhibitors Versus Sulfonylureas to Metformin Therapy in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

October 13th 2015

Compared with sulfonylureas, DPP-4 inhibitors were associated with lower risks for all-cause death, MACEs, ischemic stroke, and hypoglycemia when used as add-ons to metformin therapy (Annals of Internal Medicine)

Impact of insulin initiation on glycaemic variability and glucose profiles in a primary healthcare Type 2 diabetes cohort: analysis of continuous glucose monitoring data from the INITIATION study

October 8th 2015

A prospective randomized controlled study of a virtual clinic integrating primary and specialist care for patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus

October 8th 2015

The virtual clinic model explored in this study showed a clinically important improvement in glycaemic control. Although this improvement was not superior to that observed in the control participants, this might be attributable to the systemic impact of the virtual clinic on the practice as a whole (Diabetic Medicine)

Disparities in type 2 diabetes prevalence among ethnic minority groups resident in Europe

October 2nd 2015

The risk of T2D among ethnic minority groups living in Europe compared to Europeans varies by geographical origin of the group: three to five times higher among South Asian, two to four times higher among Middle Eastern and North African, and two to three times higher among Sub-Saharan African origin (Internal and Emergency Medicine)

Behavioral Programs for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

October 1st 2015

Diabetes self-management education offering 10 or fewer hours of contact with delivery personnel provided little benefit. Behavioral programs seem to benefit persons with suboptimal or poor glycemic control more than those with good control (Annals of Internal Medicine)
