Lack of awareness of liver organ damage in patients with type 2 diabetes

January 26th 2021

Despite increasing evidence of a frequent hepatic involvement associated with poor prognosis, awareness of suffering of advanced liver disease in patients with T2D is remarkably low, likely reflecting little recognition also among the team of health care professionals (Acta Diabetologica)

Impact of age at type 2 diabetes mellitus diagnosis on mortality and vascular complications: systematic review and meta-analyses

January 11th 2021

Younger, rather than older, age at diabetes diagnosis was associated with higher risk of mortality and vascular disease. Early and sustained interventions to delay type 2 diabetes onset and improve blood glucose levels and cardiovascular risk profiles of those already diagnosed are essential to reduce morbidity and mortality (Diabetologia)

Risks of and risk factors for COVID-19 disease in people with diabetes: a cohort study of the total population of Scotland

January 4th 2021

Overall risks of fatal or critical care unit-treated COVID-19 were substantially elevated in those with type 1 and type 2 diabetes compared with the background population. The risk of fatal or critical care unit-treated COVID-19, and therefore the need for special protective measures, varies widely among those with diabetes but can be predicted reasonably well using previous clinical history (The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology)

Comparing the bone mineral density among male patients with latent autoimmune diabetes and classical type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and exploring risk factors for osteoporosis

January 3rd 2021

Compared with male patients with T2DM, lower BMDs were observed in patients with LADA and T1DM. Low BMI, uric acid, C-peptide levels, and high osteocalcin levels are risk factors for developing low BMD in male patients with diabetes (Journal of Endocrinological Investigation)

Adult-onset autoimmune diabetes: comparative analysis of classical and latent presentation

December 7th 2020

Patients with classic T1DM presented more often with symptoms, lower BMI and higher number of autoantibodies, which may be related to a more aggressive autoimmune process. Patients with LADA developed more frequently microvascular complications for the same disease duration, namely diabetic nephropathy, and had more often metabolic syndrome (Diabetology & Metabolic Syndrome)

Glycemic control before admission is an important determinant of prognosis in patients with coronavirus disease 2019

November 25th 2020

HbA1c was an independent risk factor for poor outcomes in coronavirus disease 2019 patients. Severe pulmonary infection and consequent acute respiratory distress syndrome might be the primary causes of death in insufficient glycemic control patients (Journal of Diabetes Investigation)

Association of Serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D Concentrations With All-Cause and Cause-Specific Mortality Among Individuals With Diabetes

November 12th 2020

Higher serum 25(OH)D levels were significantly associated with lower all-cause and CVD mortality. These findings suggest that maintaining adequate vitamin D status may lower mortality risk in individuals with diabetes (Diabetes Care)

The Prevalence of Autoimmune Diseases in Longstanding Diabetes: Results from the Canadian Study of Longevity in Type 1 Diabetes

October 27th 2020

Lifetime risk of autoimmune disease in longstanding T1D approaches 50%, is greater in females, and is driven by thyroid disease. The probability of diabetes complications such as CVD was lower in those with autoimmune disease, which was driven mostly by non-thyroid autoimmune diseases (Canadian Journal of Diabetes)

Comparing Beta Cell Preservation Across Clinical Trials in Recent-Onset Type 1 Diabetes

October 23rd 2020

Several immunotherapies have demonstrated endogenous insulin preservation in recent-onset type 1 diabetes (T1D). We considered the primary results of rituximab, abatacept, teplizumab, alefacept, high-dose antithymocyte globulin (ATG), low-dose ATG, and low-dose ATG ± granulocyte-colony–stimulating factor trials in an attempt to rank the effectiveness of the agents studied. C-peptide 2-h area under the curve means were modeled using analysis of covariance (Diabetes Technology and Therapeutics)

Hypoglycemia in Type 2 Diabetes exacerbates Amyloid‐related proteins associated with dementia

October 8th 2020

The AD‐associated protein pattern found in T2D, with basal elevated APP and reduced SNCA, was exaggerated by hypoglycemia with increased APP and decreased SNCA (Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism)

Impact of Comorbidities and Glycemia at Admission and Dipeptidyl Peptidase 4 Inhibitors in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes With COVID-19

October 7th 2020

Plasma glucose levels at admission and antidiabetes drugs may influence the survival of COVID-19 patients affected by type 2 diabetes (Diabetes Care)

Alterations of Gut Microbiota in Type 2 Diabetes Individuals and the Confounding Effect of Antidiabetic Agents

September 29th 2020

The findings of this study have added a novel understanding about the pathogenesis of the disease and the mechanisms underlying antidiabetic therapy, which are of potential interest for therapeutic lines and further studies (Journal of Diabetes Research)

Multimorbidity, glycaemic variability and time in target range in people with type 2 diabetes: a baseline analysis of the GP-OSMOTIC trial

September 18th 2020

While multimorbidity was common in this T2D cohort, it was not associ (Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice)ated with HbA1c, CV or TIR. Future studies should explore factors other than glycaemia that contribute to the increased mortality observed in those with multimorbidity and T2D

Associations of type 1 and type 2 diabetes with COVID-19-related mortality in England: a whole-population study

September 18th 2020

The results of this nationwide analysis in England show that type 1 and type 2 diabetes were both independently associated with a significant increased odds of in-hospital death with COVID-19 (The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology)

An increase in inflammation and islet dysfunction is a feature of prediabetes

September 11th 2020

Based on our findings, inflammation and islet dysfunction may be more significant than originally thought in people with prediabetes. Rather than being in a normal state before diabetes occurs, it appears they are already in an early diabetic condition more closely resembling T2D (Diabetes/Metabolism Research and Reviews)

Prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus: a systematic review and meta-analysis

August 26th 2020

NAFLD prevalence in patients with type 1 diabetes is considerable and is highly dependent on the specific diagnostic modality and NAFLD definition used. These data are helpful in directing actions to standardize NAFLD diagnosis, which will help defining contributing mechanisms and outcomes (Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism)

Risk factors for COVID-19-related mortality in people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes in England: a population-based cohort study

August 14th 2020

Deaths in people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes rose sharply during the initial COVID-19 pandemic in England. Increased COVID-19-related mortality was associated not only with cardiovascular and renal complications of diabetes but, independently, also with glycaemic control and BMI (The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology)

Bone mineral density spectrum in individuals with type 1 diabetes, LADA , and type 2 diabetes

August 4th 2020

BMD values in T1D, LADA and T2D were in an increasing order of mention. Patients with autoimmune diabetes were more susceptible to osteoporosis. A lower C‐peptide level may be responsible for decreased BMD in individuals with autoimmune diabetes (Diabetes/Metabolism Research and Reviews)

Persons with type 2 diabetes and high insulin persistence were associated with a lower risk of mortality

July 28th 2020

This study showed that patients with ≥90% insulin persistence were associated with lower risks of all‐cause mortality than did patients with <90% insulin persistence (Journal of Diabetes Investigation)
