Yet another fine Oxford Handbook rolls off the production line and this excellent book will appeal to a large audience, well outside the specialities of infectious diseases and microbiology. These topics transcend a large number of specialties and if you want a useful and practical textbook on this subject then this could fit the bill. Although it is part of the highly respected (which is well deserved) Oxford Handbook series, this is certainly a chunky and information dense offering which runs to just under 900 pages. Yet it retains the dimensions of many of its siblings in the Oxford Handbook series and still posses the durable vinyl cover. It is still a handbook but chunky and covers a huge range of topics.
The impressive content in this book is written in a practical way to help you deal with a patient’s problem or problems and at the same time the reader can easily read round the subject. The text is understandable and easy to read and broken up into logical sections allowing the reader to quickly scan the topic and pick up the information needed. Being recently published means that this book is pretty up to date and I am sure will remain so for some time to come.
As would be expected from a member of this highly respected Oxford Handbook family, it is very clinically orientated and is aimed at a healthcare professional over a wide range of specialties as well as seniority. Anyone with an interest in infectious diseases will find this most useful and for many people this could act as their single reference source on this topic. I suspect it may be too detailed for medical students but it is an excellent resource for a GP and hospital based doctors. It is also well equipped to allow a reader to open up the book and read up on a specific topic or even a random topic as an educational exercise.
Even better it is keenly priced and represents good value for money. The only minor criticism I have is that it would be great to have a web or app version bundled with the cost of this book and for this, some people would be prepared to pay a little more. However the book is excellent and I am sure would satisfy many people’s needs. It is an interesting read and a highly relevant textbook which comes from an excellent heritage whilst being keenly priced. Overall this is an excellent offering.
